After doing the conversion the price works out to $1.10 a litre. Here, petrol is $1.49 a lt. But ... the price goes up and down like a yo-yo and it's a matter of which day is cheaper as prices change every few days.
When I first had my licence, petrol was 20 cents a gallon (that's imperial gallons, not US gallons) - it cost $2 to fill the tank. Times certainly have changed.

You're right; Europeans would laugh at us (and our big cars) when we complain about gas prices.
