My 9 year old Matryoshka, my 4 year Matryoshka and I attended the family-friendly cupcake reception celebrating the opening of: Matryoshka: The Russian Nesting Doll exhibit at the Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis on Saturday afternoon. It's a vast and impressive accumulation of amazing Matryoshkas on loan from the Brokop Collection, the first of its kind at a US museum. The Museum of Russian Art is the only museum in North America dedicated exclusively to the presentation of Russian art and artifacts housed in a wonderful, former church.

It's an awesome museum for sure, and I am so happy that you have brought attention to it. It's a little jewel, and I hope that you will post some more photos of it. Love the political dolls. Guess I'm going to have to take our Olivia there to see them because she knows the dolls since I brought back some from Russia myself...none as beautiful as these, however! Have a good Sunday with that beautiful family of yours!

Great show! A serious nod to an iconic folk art.
I especially liked it that visitors could leave the gift shop with a copy of The Art of the Russian Matryoshka, the definitive account of the history, villages of making, fabrication, styles, artists, and notes on collecting. I especially liked it that those books were available because I co-wrote and produced the book.

I want to see that museum very much! coincidentally, I happened to be in a shop recently that stocked nothing else but those dolls, marvelous time looking and some snaps (but sadly I botched them downloading)
As my grandparents are from Russia,there are such dolls of course also here at home. Knowing that there is now also a museum makes one glad as they brought much happiness for many people - and yes, that includes museums as well.

The political one(s) are very strange! Probably shouldn't think about it too hard... Nice photos, they are lovely objects - the regular ones, not the Putin one! Children always find them fascinating, too.

I very much appreciate you interest to our national doll. Oh, there is a museum! When I was a child I had my personal set, presented by my babushka (grandma). I still have it at my ma's place and the colors are very fresh and bright (well, I need to photo them, good idea for daily post!).

My grandmother used to have some Russian nesting dolls and I used to love playing with them whenever I went over to her house. Lots of memories...
