Don't drink & drive!

Last Thursday, Eagan High School's "SADD" (Students against destructive decisions) and "MADD" (Mothers against drunk driving) in cooperation with the Eagan Police and Eagan Fire departments conducted a Mock Crash caused by a drunk driver. The Bergstrom family of Eagan told the students how they lost three of their five children on October 10, 2004 because of a drunk driver. After that gathering in the high school gymnasium, the students exited the school to the parking lot to observe the pretend car accident. Several students played the parts of the passengers in the two cars. The police arrived first, then the fire fighters and paramedics and even a state trooper.

Eventually, an emergency evacuation helicopter arrived from North Memorial Hospital to airlift a "critically injured" victim to their trauma center hospital in Minneapolis. The sober ending to the mock crash was the arrival of the hearse to pick up a dead victim. The more than 1,000 Juniors and Seniors witnessed a very serious issue which claims over 18,000 lives annually in the United States.
Don't drink and then drive!

  2. I hope programs like this one work. Teenagers are so certain it can't happen to them.

  3. The hearse should have brought the program to a grim end. Teen-agers believe that they are invulnerable, but education certainly cannot hurt!

  4. A major problem here too!

  5. Hopefully it made an impression. Unfortunately, now not only do we have to worry about drinking, but also talking on the phone or texting. It's scary!

  6. We just had a big drunk driving case here in Jackson. One of the city's most prominent families was involved in a collison that killed two young doctors. Everyone thought the family money was going to pay her ticket out of justice, but the judge actually sentenced her to 18 years. I believe justice was served in this case.

All she would have had to do is call a taxi from that party and two doctors would still be alive. And she would not be facing jail time. I'm glad the young people in your community are highlighting this danger.

  7. I'm sure they'll think twice before attempting to drink & drive after this. This is a really great program, so important to get the message across!

  10. This is a much-needed demonstration for young adults and teens. «Louis'» sister's youngest son was killed in a roll-over crash while driving drunk; his fiancée also died in the crash.

  14. I guess most of the students will remember this much better than just reading about it.!
Impressive work from all that took part in the program.

  15. How important, how important. There are way too many sights and drivers in the streets over here, that should have been there.
    A wonderful Tuesday.

  18. I remember being shown very graphic films in driver's ed, which made everybody in the class watch in shock...and they taught us all a lesson.

  20. What a nice way of giving info and education.

I dreaded attending trauma and disaster drills over here. Once I was one of the nurse participant,I was so tired running and 'resuscitating' the victims.

  21. How very true. Drunk driving kills a lot of people here in Mumbai too.

  22. Am I relieved to read that this was just a demonstration! I'm glad everyone bothered to teach the kids. Deaths because of something that can be avoided are so sad and senseless.
