Empty bowls

The 1st annual "empty bowls" fundraiser dished up at the Eagan Community Center on Monday from 11 am to 7 pm. Participants each picked one of 1,000 handmade bowls made by volunteer potters at the Eagan Art House and local schools, gave a $25 donation and enjoyed a simple meal of soup & bread which made a difference for our local food shelf, the Eagan Resource Center.

The Fedoras sang lively barbershop music followed by the famous Brassy Quintet of Eagan, fun entertainment during soup supping at this Eagan 150th anniversary event.

Leif, was the event sold out? With 1,000 bowls to sell, it would be a great boon to the center if they all sold. «Louis» hopes this is the case!

Eagen folks are responsible folks. Love the idea of this fund-raiser.

You guys in Eagan are really scoring lots of mitsvah points (as my son puts it).

I was surprised not to see food in the bowls...but I'm glad that you saw fit to involve thyself in a worthy event like this. I think it beats going through ugly tunnels with chain link fences in front of them!

Is it true that you wanted to sing in the quartet and they referred you to Ozzie Osbourne?

Speaking of ding-a-lings, did you hear the story about the down-and-outer (I think his name was Hagen Daws or something like that) who stopped by a local church and asked the pastor if he could earn some money by doing some work in the parish.

The pastor was busy, and brushed him off with a quick, "Yeah, I'll give you a couple of bucks if you go clean the bell tower." The guy left and the pastor went back to planning his next fund-raiser.

Hagen Daws climbed up the bell tower and immediately began to scrub the bell. Unfortunately, he was kind of a klutz and he bumped into the bell which sent it swinging. When it swung back around it hit him in the face and knocked him out of the bell tower. He fell two stories to the ground where he lay very still.

The pastor heard a big commotion on the parish grounds, sighed, said "Now, what the hell is going on?" and trudged outside to find a large crowd gathered about a body smashed on the grass.

The people were stunned. "What happened Father?" they asked all at once. "We think he's dead!" they said. "Do you know him, Father?"

The pastor walked up to the body, looked carefully at the man, and said:

"No, I don't know him, but his face sure rings a bell!"

This was an awesome event, very worthwhile with funds going to the Eagan Food Shelf. Many thanks to all who made it a success. So many bowls to choose from it took longer to pick one out than eat the delicious soups. Looking forward to next year's empty bowl event.
