Lone Oak Days

Flicka, Ricka & Dicka visited Holz Farm during the "Lone Oak Days" held last Saturday and Sunday. They took a hay ride with Farmer Fred, rode a horse and pony, posed on a pumpkin wagon and petted live animals in the red barn. Had they arrived earlier, they might have tried rope making, butter churning, field plowing, corn grinding, bread baking, egg picking, pedaling tractors or digging potatoes. Presented by "Friends of the Farm" and Eagan Parks & Recreation.

Homecoming Queen & her friends

Eastview High School, located in Apple Valley just south of Eagan, celebrated its "Homecoming" this past weekend. Our beautiful neighbor girl, Barbie, in the black striped dress, was crowned as the "Homecoming Queen." Friday night was the football game and Saturday night was the semi-formal dance. Barbie and many of her classmates posed for a pre-dinner photo at Jensen Lake. Almost 15 couples gathered but I preferred this smaller group photo.

Boys and their toys

On Saturday, September 26, my family and I drove less than 15 minutes north of Eagan to the Minnesota Air Guard Museum. After passing through the car search by soldiers armed with M4 guns, we walked around and climbed in and out of vintage airplanes no longer in active military service.

These three guys could have been former pilots. I should have conducted a "Steffe interview." The Minnesota Air Museum currently has 22 aircraft in its collection. One of the larger collections in the upper Midwest, it represents a rather complete arsenal of post WWII jet aircraft.

Signs, signs, signs

When I drove into our friends' neighborhood, I noticed this glob of signs! Couldn't they have squeezed in just one more sign?

Eagan Rotarian series #6

Jim McDonald has served as a police officer in Eagan since 1988. In September 2006, he became our police chief for a police department which started back in 1965. Over 68 highly educated officers serve to protect our community; our crime rate in Eagan is lower than the Minnesota state average which is lower than the US average. The 2009 Eagan police department budget is $10,956,300. Over $225,000 in fines or forfeitures were collected in 2008.

Jim posed with a replica of the original 1965 Ford police car. The car cost $2,900 at that time. A new police care now costs $38,000.

Located at 2950 Highway 55, this Missouri Synod Lutheran Church and school stand as a pillar in their community.

This Sheriff won't get very far, very fast with his back tire missing! A few other bloggers on our photo safari also shot this car a few weeks ago.

The Eagan Rotary Club

I stepped back from the podium to photograph my Eagan Rotary Club saying the "Pledge of Allegiance." We begin each weekly, Wednesday lunch meeting in this way.

The pledge of Allegiance: "I pledge my allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, to the Republic for which is stands, one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all."

My daughter saw this snapper turtle walking through our backyard during lunch one day. I sprang across the grass to capture him with my camera lens for my blog.

Flowers & Jazz

Sadly, the weekly Wednesday Eagan Market Fest events came to an end on Wednesday, September 16. I loved the farmers markets with fresh produce, $5 flower bouquets and other vendors.

"Elder Jazz" played on the Eagan Rotary Band Shell stage, a "seasoned" group of guys playing drums, bass, trumpet, keyboard and various saxophones!

The Cedar Grove Barbers

Ron and his barber shop buddies were willing to have me take their picture after my haircut. Formerly known as "Cedarvale Barber Shop" for 38 years, they moved to this location 3 years ago due to city redevelopment. Dry haircuts cost $17.

Have my barber, Ron, or one of the other guys cut your hair at 1977 Silver Bell Road in north Eagan.

The Velvet Tones

The Velvet Tones, a local senior choir of 70 voices from Dakota County, was started 13 years ago. They practice weekly on Wednesday mornings from September through May and perform in various venues. I heard, watched and photographed them performing at last week's Eagan Market Fest.

Eagan Rotarian series #5

Beth Sawicki, our Eagan Rotary club past president 2008 - 2009, proudly shows you the "Eagan Rotary Band Shell." The $100,000+ service project was mostly funded by the Eagan Rotary club as a venue for live outdoor concerts, plays, speakers, etc. Beth's husband is a Rotarian in a neighboring club.

Water fun, anyone?

"Cascade Bay" is one of the largest outdoor swim parks in Minnesota! Water slides, "lazy river," swimming pools, beach chairs for laying in the sun and beautiful weather! This facility is situated next to the civic ice area and Eagan Municipal center. The manager of both facilities brought me up to the roof to take the top photo!

Noodles for dinner

I featured "Noodles" restaurant in Eagan on my blog for ABC Wednesday - N is for Noodles! The corporate office found my blog and sent me 4 free bowl coupons for my posting on them!

My family enjoyed a Friday night dinner together! 'Twas yummy!

Back to school

Tuesday, September 8 was the return to school in our district. Lots of parents with cameras gathered to send off the almost 20 kids who boarded the yellow school bus at the corner of our yard.

Roller skiing dude

This Eastview High School kid was roller skiing laps around our neighborhood last Sunday. I guess the curves and hills are good nordic skiing training! I interrupted his workout long enough for a photo but he skied off before I could catch his name. Check out his cool roller skis!

Minnesota State Fair

On Friday, September 4, my family, my parents-in-law from Iowa and I spent the day at the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul just 20 minutes north of Eagan. We ate funny foods, rode thrilling rides, saw farm animals, and walked and walked and walked!

Our 9 year old tried hand milking a cow outside the cow barns.

The art building is a fun place to look at paintings, photographs, sculptures and other art media. Lots of ribbon winners in there!

Dream house series #7

How do you like this "prairie style?" Three car garages tend to be the normal expectation with new houses in our city.

Photo safari

I met four other guys earlier this week for a fun "photo safari" down near Vermillion and Hastings, Minnesota. It was a 35 minute drive south of EAGAN through farm land and countryside to the "Little Log House Pioneer Village." I was quite "out-camera-ed" by those guys but it was fun and they give me some good photo tips. Some more snaps coming up later from the adventure.

"Harvest of Art" opening

The Eagan Art House held its "A Community of Art Exhibit" on the last sunny, Sunday afternoon of August. Peter the Potter was demonstrating pottery, Holly the painter was painting and a high school student was playing violin pieces out of the Suzuki Book 7. (I only made it to the end of Book 4.) I bought the pottery plate and bowl stacked on Peter's table from the pottery sale across from him. A sale of drawings, photographs and paintings was happening inside.

Eagan Rotarian series #4

Scott O. Swenson, Market President of Home Federal Bank in Eagan, served several years ago as the Eagan Rotary Club president. As the current club secretary, he'll be the new club president again in the 2011-2012 Rotary year.

Tuesday, August 11 was the bank's second anniversary party. Scott served some wine and greeted friends, customers, prospects and fellow Rotarians. If you have commercial bank needs, email or call Scott for some excellent advice. He may even pour you a glass of Merlot!

Q is for Qwest!

Qwest is our local telephone company. Driving back to my office, I spotted the Qwest repair truck at our corner again. Their work better not affect my high speed internet connection nor interrupt my blogging! I hope it's a QUICK, quiet repair!
